Web Camera Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

FAQ 1: What is the purpose of the cameras?

The primary purpose of cameras on the road network is for traffic control.

Our three traffic management centres share the camera images with Queensland Police. The images of roads and traffic help Main Roads, RACQ and Queensland Police during incidents such as:

• emergencies
• accidents
• general traffic management.

The secondary purpose of the cameras is to help drivers to make the best travel decision based on current traffic images.

FAQ 2: How is closed circuit television (CCTV) used?

Closed circuit television is used to relay real-time images of traffic conditions to one of our three traffic management centres. The images are viewed by traffic operators and assist to manage traffic incidents. Most of the cameras on the road network have pan, tilt and zoom capabilities. Only a few cameras are actual web cameras.

FAQ 3: Sometimes the cameras are not working. Why does this happen?

During a traffic incident such as an emergency or accident, a camera may be turned off for a period of time. A camera is turned off to protect the privacy of drivers.

Other times an image may not be available due to technical problems. The problem could be with the cameras or the communication network used to relay the camera images. Sometimes the cameras have to be repaired on-site, at the actual camera location.

If the problem is related to the communication network, some delay up to several days or weeks may be experienced depending on the fault type.

Main Roads is investigating the privacy, technical and cost issues of the cameras. Camera availability and public viewing of images on the internet may change in the future.
